“I am very quiet. Let the months and years come, they can take nothing from me, they can take nothing more. I am so alone, and so without hope that I can confront them without fear. The life that has borne me through these years is still in my hands and my eyes. Whether I have subdued it, I know not. But so long as it is there it will seek its own way out, heedless of the will that is within me"
Pg 295
Explain what the quotation means in the context of the text.
Basically Paul is the only remaining one out of his group of friends that decided to join a couple years ago. “They can take nothing more. I am so alone” he lost his friends which were basically like his family. He has given up on the war and I’m guessing he wants to start over “The life that has borne me through these years is still in my hands and my eyes” He’s ready to move on regardless of how the war had affected him.
Why it is important/interesting to you
This was an interesting quote because I found it fitting as an ending to a war story. Paul had lost everything important to him and he had some horrible experiences himself. The quote was a perfect way to end the story.
