“This the first time I kill with my hands, whom I can see close at hand, whose death is my doing.”
Pg 221 chapter 9
Explain what the quotation means in the context of the text.
Even though killing is killing Paul realizes that it is much different to shoot somebody from far away and to have to fight someone hand to hand and to watch them die. Paul is sitting in his hole when all of a sudden a man jumps inside. Quickly reacting Paul furiously stabs the figure. Paul comes face to face with the person and is forced to watch him suffer because Paul does not have the heart to stab him again and he cannot get out because of heavy machine gun fire. Paul starts to realize the damage he is inflicting. Paul is so deranged, he starts to have a mental battle with himself.
Why it is important/interesting to you
This just goes to show the how war affects people. It takes a lot of physical and mental courage to take part in such dangerous and unforgiving acts. The mental strain Paul goes through is quite interesting. He goes through all of these examples such as since I killed this man does his wife become mine? He then goes on to explain to the dead guy he is sorry for killing him. This interaction is quite crazy.
